How would you describe your role at Smithsonian Student Travel?
In my latest role I work very closely with our group leaders on several different projects. I manage orientation for new group leaders and work with experienced teachers through our Educational Travel Advisor program. It’s a lot of event planning, logistics and getting to know incredible teachers—and a lot of fun.
You said, “In my latest role.” How long have you worked with Smithsonian Student Travel?
Nine years! And before I joined Smithsonian Student Travel, I worked in the international tours division of EF for ten years. It was eye opening to transition into the domestic tours. I had traveled all over the world, but hadn’t really explored the U.S. Now I know, there’s a lot to explore and experience!
So what’s your favorite place to travel?
That’s easy: New York City. It’s always exciting. I feel like a little kid every time I go. The city seems to have that effect on people. I love taking new group leaders there on orientation. For many it’s their first time in the city and seeing the wide-eyed wonder in them is a lot like the feeling they’ll have showing their students America on tour.
You’ve gotten to experience a lot with group leaders. Do you have a favorite memory?
It is hard to choose, but I did have one experience that always stands out in my mind. During a trip to Washington, D.C., I had the opportunity to go through the Holocaust museum with one of our group leaders. She has an incredible amount of knowledge about that period in history and brings so much passion and thoughtfulness to the subject. I learned a lot from her. Now I say she’s my favorite teacher.
