Educational Benefits
What does it mean that Smithsonian Student Travel tours are accredited?
Smithsonian Student Travel tours are the only educational tours to be accredited by CITA, MSACES, and WASC. This means that the tours have all been recognized for their quality and educational value, meeting rigorous standards, the same as the best schools across the U.S.
How do students earn credit on their tour?
Students may complete our one-credit elective course with assignments before, during and after your tour. There is a $100 tuition fee, which is waived until 2010. We recommend that your teacher seek approval from your school administration before the tour.
How do students prepare for the class trip?
Your teacher may recommend books, movies, and website links on the Tour Participant Site. Many teachers may also assign journal projects during the trip that helps you focus on your educational objectives. You can also find links to Smithsonian articles, exhibit news and other material from Smithsonian Student Travel on Facebook (find us as Smithsonian Student Travel) and Twitter (search for EFSmithsonian).
What educational resources do students benefit from?
We provide every group leader with resources created by the Smithsonian to use with students before and during your tour. In addition, students each receive a personal travel journal, a place to reflect on the class trip experience. Your tour director has also been trained to facilitate object-based and inquiry-based learning and ensure all students participate.
